Reiki Attunement Preparation. Please approach preparation for a Reiki attunement consciously, especially if previous initiations caused a healing crisis or if you are new to Reiki. These recommendations are intended to help avoid a healing crisis or at least reduce its effects.
Preparation for a Reiki Attunement
2–3 days before the attunement of Reiki, it is recommended to avoid meat and alcohol and switch to lighter meals. It is also important to drink plenty of clean water—before the attunement, after it, and especially on the day you receive the attunement.
What Is Important to Know Before a Reiki Attunement
It is generally recommended to receive the attunement in the morning or during the first half of the day. If you receive it right before sleep, you may find it difficult to fall asleep because you may feel the energy moving through your body (this often happens with highly sensitive people).
However, it is best to try what works for you. For some people, receiving the attunement before sleep may feel more comfortable, especially if they are busy during the day.
On the day of the attunement, it is important to relax the body as much as possible. This can be done through yoga, a sauna, a relaxing bath, massage, or self-massage. The more relaxed the body is, the easier the attunement process may feel, and the more likely it is that a healing crisis will be minimized or avoided.
It is strongly recommended not to ignore these suggestions. At the very least, take a warm shower and perform a short self-massage before the attunement.
- It is recommended to begin preparing for the attunement a little in advance (ideally 30–60 minutes before). Turn off the sound on your phone, play relaxing music, and, if you wish, light incense, aromatic sticks, or use essential oils. The important thing is to calm yourself and shift your attention—especially if you are receiving the attunement after a busy or demanding day. Your task is to become present, bringing your awareness to the here and now, to your body, and to the sacred moment of the initiation.
- At the scheduled time, take a comfortable position (sitting with a straight back or lying down with your arms and legs relaxed and slightly apart). Play soft relaxing music without words (or the music recommended by your Master), express your intention, close your eyes, and simply observe the sensations in your body.
Receiving attunements while lying down is often more comfortable because the body can relax more deeply. However, for stronger attunements—such as Kundalini Reiki—it is recommended to begin the process sitting, at least at the start.
Place a chair near your bed and use pillows on the seat and behind your back so you feel comfortable. Keep your feet firmly on the floor to stay grounded. Often, your body will naturally tell you whether it feels better to remain sitting or to lie down.
If you begin the attunement sitting, you may eventually feel the need to lie down. In that case, gently move to the bed without sudden movements so as not to interrupt the flow of energy, and continue receiving the energy while lying down. This is not a strict rule, but in practice many find that the process feels smoother this way: first grounding while sitting, then relaxing more deeply while lying down and allowing the remaining energy to integrate.
After the attunement, it is recommended to avoid sexual activity for about 24 hours so the energy can integrate properly within the body.
